One of the first questions a Delhi or NCR founder asks when starting a trademark filing is a practical one: which office actually handles my application, and do I have to go there? The short answer is that the Delhi Trade Marks Registry is the office of record for applicants based across a large swathe of northern India — but because filing is fully electronic and all-India, you will almost certainly never set foot inside it. This guide explains where the Delhi Registry sits, the territory it covers, how the Trade Marks Rules decide which office your application belongs to, and how applicants across Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and Faridabad are handled — so you can file with confidence and stop worrying about geography.
Where the Delhi Trade Marks Registry is located
The Delhi branch of the Trade Marks Registry is located at Boudhik Sampada Bhawan, Plot No. 32, Sector 14, Dwarka, New Delhi. "Boudhik Sampada Bhawan" translates to "Intellectual Property Building", and it is the dedicated IP office complex for the region, housing the Registrar of Trade Marks for the Delhi jurisdiction. It is one of five branch offices of the Trade Marks Registry in India — the others being Mumbai (the head office), Kolkata, Chennai and Ahmedabad — each assigned a defined territory.
Although the office has a physical address, the day-to-day life of a modern trademark application happens on the IP India portal at ipindiaonline.gov.in. Applications, examination reports, replies, journal advertisement and even most hearings run through the online system. When you file a TM-A for a Delhi business, it is routed to the Delhi Registry electronically; the Dwarka building is where the file notionally sits, not somewhere you queue up.
The territory the Delhi Registry covers
The Delhi Trade Marks Registry has one of the largest territorial jurisdictions of any branch. It handles applicants whose principal place of business falls within:
- Delhi (the National Capital Territory)
- Haryana
- Himachal Pradesh
- Jammu & Kashmir
- Punjab
- Uttar Pradesh
- Uttarakhand
- The Union Territory of Chandigarh
That is a sweep from the hills of Himachal and Uttarakhand down through Punjab, Haryana and the entire expanse of Uttar Pradesh. It means a jewellery house in Delhi, a garment exporter in Ludhiana, an auto-parts trader in Kanpur and a software startup in Dehradun all file through the same Delhi office of record. For NCR founders this is convenient: the entire capital region — the Delhi districts plus the Haryana and UP satellites — sits inside a single jurisdiction.
The Delhi Registry covers eight states and UTs — but your keyboard is the only office you'll actually visit.
How jurisdiction is decided: your principal place of business
Here is the rule that trips people up. The office that handles your application is not chosen by where you want to file, and it is not the office nearest to you geographically in some abstract sense. Under the Trade Marks Rules, jurisdiction is fixed by the applicant's principal place of business in India, as stated on the TM-A form. If your business's principal place is in Delhi, Gurgaon or Noida, your appropriate office is the Delhi Registry — full stop.
This matters because getting the principal-place-of-business address right on the application is what routes the file correctly. An error here can send your application to the wrong office and cause avoidable friction. Where an applicant has no principal place of business in India (for example a foreign applicant), jurisdiction is instead determined by the address for service. We walk through the exact documents and address details you need in our Delhi documents checklist, and the free IP readiness audit helps confirm you have the basics in order before filing.
E-filing means all-India, online, and rarely in person
The single most reassuring fact for any Delhi or NCR applicant: trademark filing in India is entirely electronic and all-India. You do not need to travel to Dwarka to file, and you do not need to be physically present for most steps. The TM-A application, the response to any examination report, and the tracking of your status all happen online through the IP India portal. Even hearings — for objection replies or oppositions — are now routinely conducted through video conferencing.
So while your file is jurisdictionally "in" the Delhi Registry, the process feels location-independent. A founder in Ghaziabad and a founder in Chandigarh have exactly the same online experience. If an examination report raises a Section 9 or Section 11 objection, you file the objection reply electronically; our Delhi objection reply guide shows how. To follow a live application, you can check status yourself — see how to track trademark status. And the overall journey from filing to registration, typically 18 to 24 months on a clean path, is mapped in our process and timeline guide.
How NCR applicants — Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Faridabad — are handled
The National Capital Region straddles three states — Delhi (NCT), Haryana and Uttar Pradesh — but for trademark purposes they all funnel into the Delhi Registry, because Haryana and UP both fall within its jurisdiction:
- Noida and Greater Noida sit in Uttar Pradesh, which is within the Delhi Registry's jurisdiction. A Noida IT or manufacturing business files through Delhi. See our Noida trademark hub.
- Gurgaon (Gurugram) and Faridabad are in Haryana, also within the Delhi jurisdiction. Gurgaon's corporate and startup ecosystem files through Delhi — see the Gurgaon hub and the Faridabad hub.
- Ghaziabad is in Uttar Pradesh, again within the Delhi jurisdiction. See the Ghaziabad hub.
In other words, the entire NCR is a single Delhi-Registry catchment. Whether your registered office is in central New Delhi or in a Noida sector, the office of record and the online process are identical. What decides your file is the address on the form, not the state boundary you happen to sit behind.
What jurisdiction does — and does not — change
It is worth being precise about what the jurisdiction of your office actually affects. It determines which Registrar's staff examine and process your file, which office advertises it in the Trade Marks Journal, and where any physical records are held. It does not limit the geographic scope of your protection: a trademark registered through the Delhi Registry is valid and enforceable across the whole of India, not just the eight states the Delhi office administers. A Delhi-filed mark protects you equally in Mumbai, Bengaluru or Kolkata.
The jurisdiction also does not change the fees or the classes. The government fee remains ₹4,500 per class for individuals, startups and MSMEs on e-filing (and ₹9,000 per class otherwise), whichever office handles you — see our Delhi cost and fees guide. And the NICE class you file in is dictated by your goods and services, not your office; use the class finder to confirm.
The bottom line for Delhi and NCR filers
If your business's principal place is anywhere in Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand or Chandigarh, your trademark file belongs to the Delhi Trade Marks Registry at Boudhik Sampada Bhawan in Dwarka — and you can run the entire process online without ever going there. Put the correct principal-place-of-business address on the form, choose the right classes, and file. For the full picture of documents, timeline and fees, our Delhi 2026 registration guide ties it together, and when you are ready to file, start with a proper trademark search so your application clears the first time.
